Juan Ponce de Leon is an explorer from Spain who discovered Florida. He was born in 1460 (the date is uncertain), in San Servas Spain .Although born into a noble family, he was poor, and sought fame and fortune as asoldier. He recieved education on this subject, and later fought Muslims on southern Spain, during the early 1490s. He helped in the ten-year conquest of the Muslim Kingdom in Granada, Spain.

Juan Ponce de Leon is a famous Spanish explorer, because he was the first European to travel to Florida. He did this while searching for the Fountain of Youth. Also, while searching for the Fountain of Youth, he explored parts of Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. Before he led his own expeditions, he sailed with Christopher Columbus. He sailed with him on his second voyage to the New World. They sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1493, while sailing to the New World.

So, Christopher Columbus was his inspiration. In all, Ponce went on four voyages of exploration. The first time he traveled with Christopher Columbus, on his second voyages to the New World. The second time, he was looking for The Fountain of Youth. This time he discovered Florida. So you could say, he discovered Florida by mistake. After this trip, he sailed back home, and set off for another quest to find The Fountain of Youth, about a year later. This time he came across the New World. Once again, by mistake. So he sailed back in disappointment, and set off again in the early 1500s. This time he explored parts of South America; Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas.

So, Juan Ponce de Leon never found The Fountain of Youth. The Fountain of Youth was just a legendary object he heard about in the main land. Basically, The Fountain of Youth was an everlasting spring. Whoever drank from it wouldn't turn old. If an old person drank from it they would turn young again. And if a young person drank from it, they wouldn't turn old.

His voyages to find The Fountain of Youth were long and would often have a shortage of food. Three out of four of the times the expedition was led by Juan himself. On his expeditions, not everyone would come back alive. Many would die from the deadly epidemic of the century. Even though those expeditions weren't that safe, they were successful in a way. Even though he did not find The Fountain of Youth, he did discover new lands.
